Champaign intersection placed on all-way stop after crash

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — An intersection in Champaign is currently operating as an all-way stop after a light control box was damaged in a crash early Monday morning.

The intersection is at University Avenue and First Street and the crash happened just before 4 a.m. Lieutenant Kurt Buckley, District Patrol Commander, said a car driving east on University ran through a red light and hit a car driving south on First.

The collision sent both cars onto the sidewalk at the southeast corner of the intersection, hitting the control box and leaving the intersection with no traffic control.

Both people in the southbound car were taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution, but Buckley said no major injuries were reported. The driver of the eastbound car was given a ticket for failing to stop at a red light.

Officials from the City of Champaign said temporary stop signs have been placed at the intersection to help with traffic control. The all-way stop will be in effect until crews can repair the traffic control box later on Monday.
