Chamber commends Geisinger traffic improvement

May 24—DANVILLE — The Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce released a statement congratulating Geisinger officials following their announcement of planned traffic improvements at the Danville hospital.

Earlier this week, Geisinger announced the first phase of their road relocation project would begin June 3.

The project will replace the one-way continuous loop in front of the hospital with a two-way street featuring separate drop-off loops for patients, public transportation and valet parking, according to Geisinger's release.

"The reconfigured road will allow for a more efficient traffic pattern and is expected to reduce travel times in front of the medical center," the press release said.

The chamber said Geisinger officials responded quickly to the worsening traffic situation and worked with nationally renowned engineer firms and traffic experts to pose a feasible solution.

"Their proposed solution, which moves into its construction phase in just one week, will take care of concerns that we've been hearing over the past few years," Chamber President and CEO Bob Garrett said. "This is a classic example of blending the science of engineering, with evidence-based health care decision-makers who keenly understand the individual characteristics that we all have when trying to respond to when too much traffic, moving in too many directions."

The road relocation project will positively impact not only traffic on Geisinger's campus, but will also relieve congestion on Bloom Road, Garrett added.

The chamber is asking for residents' patience through a "familiar construction phrase of 'temporary inconvenience for permanent improvement,'" they said.
