OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) is bringing new beginnings to families seeking affordable housing in Oklahoma City.

Tuesday, the groundbreaking celebration showcased renderings of the three -to-four-bedroom homes with two-car garage that will soon grace Cornerstone Creek.

Speakers included Gov. Kevin Stitt, and Marianne Rooney, one of the late Dr. David Brown’s daughters and a great-granddaughter of Samuel Roberts Noble.

Ann Felton Gilliland, CEO/Chair of Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH), said the celebration is a momentous event Habitat that marks the dawn of affordable housing in the community.

“During the past 30-plus years, we’ve built 1,093 homes for limited-income people through our New Home Construction program and helped repair and winterize more than 700 homes for homeowners in need through our Critical Home Repair program,” Felton Gilliland said. “About five years ago, I found land for sale near Piedmont, Oklahoma, and with the generous support of our donors, we raised the $2.3 million needed to purchase the land. It was a big win for Central Oklahoma Habitat.

“While everyone might see a lot of red dirt at first, we’ve already installed the infrastructure complex for Phase I, including the utilities and waterways.”

She said Habitat hopes to start building the first of Phase I’s 91 homes in the weeks ahead.

“When complete in six to eight years, we’ll have 450 well-built, energy-efficient and affordable single-family homes for limited- to moderate-income individuals and families to buy for cost and without a down payment,” Felton Gilliland said. “We are blessed with exceptional donors and volunteers who are helping us to build a better tomorrow for our future homeowners.”

Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity is now taking applications for future homeowners.
