CDC warns of potentially tainted Basil from Trader Joe’s

(NATIONAL) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted a food safety alert after an outbreak of Salmonella that is potentially connected to Infinite Herbs organic basil, which is sold at Trader Joe’s.

The CDC has received reports of 12 Salmonella infections in seven states. In one case, a person was hospitalized. There is a link between the infections and Infinite Herbs organic basil, which is sold at Trader Joe’s in 29 states (and Washington D.C.) in 2.5 oz clamshell-style containers.

Trader Joe’s has stopped shipment of the potentially dangerous basil as of April 12, 2024. Customers are warned not to consume the basil if purchased, and to clean any surfaces or items that it may have touched, like refrigerator shelves or cutting boards. Businesses that purchased the basil should throw it out, and clean and sanitize any surfaces that came into contact with the basil.

Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and symptoms start 6 hours to 6 days after the bacteria has been consumed. Most people recover after 4 to 7 days. Children under 5, elderly adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are likely to experience more severe illness and may require hospitalization.
