Carthage Council discusses filling city attorney position

CARTHAGE, Mo. — No official move Monday night in Carthage to terminate — or see whether the city council can terminate — City Administrator, Greg Dagnan.

Several motions were made, though nothing came out of it.

Councilmembers did vote unanimously to put out a request for bids by firms specializing in municipal law. It will allow them to not only look for a replacement for City Attorney, Nate Dally, but to also look at firms as another option to handle those duties.

They say they’re looking at both in order to see what would make the most sense for the city and taxpayers.

| The Latest From Carthage City Council:

Dally resigned on April 12 — just 2 days after the new city council voted to fire him and Dagnan — something with which Mayor Dan Rife did not agree.

Mayor Rife told us the unanimous vote to move forward with filling Dally’s position is — at least — progress.

“Finding areas where you do agree and making progress in those areas, I mean, just being able to have a conversation at this point is a step ahead, so I think if we can find some areas where we’ve got common ground, great, and get that process started and build off of that,” said Mayor Rife.

“I’m sure we can find an absolutely great, individual city attorney to be full time and fill that role, or partner and hire a law firm that is just as exceptional,” said Carthage City Councilmember, Derek Peterson.

The last day on the job for Dally is May 10. The council hopes to have several applicants before its next regular meeting on Tuesday, May 14.
