Career fair in Queens sparks new interests for job seekers

QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — Dozens of job seekers flocked to the annual career fair at LaGuardia Community College on Wednesday.

Over 45 service providers or employers were present for the career fair, organized by the Hispanic Federation and LaGuardia Community College.

Aliya Edwards, a 19-year-old from Canarsie, Brooklyn, studies theater at LaGuardia Community College. Edwards attended the event but says she is still figuring out what she wants to do in life.

“I don’t know yet but it’s ok not to know. It’s part of life and part of the adventure.”

To Edward’s delight, she learned about jobs in aviation that sparked her interest. “I’d get to travel a lot as a pilot or an assistant- a flight attendant so that would be really interesting for me to explore different cultures.”

Neighborhood Housing Services of Queens was also there to help people find positions. Carlos Chacon with the group said, “We help them go over their resumes, and set up an orientation session so they can follow up on their dream job.”

He added, “We want to share with the community. We are here and it’s important information to have. Help for the community.. sometimes they don’t know.”

The event was open to all. Organizers say the goal is to bring resources to the community.

Diana Caba with the Hispanic Federation said, “it’s important to have access to good jobs. Those that pay at a certain level, provide certain benefits and also training that can take people to that next level as well.”

For Aliya Edwards, the fair was a success. She plans to look for a job at LaGuardia airport immediately. “It’s the first time I thought of it and I’m going to hop right in and if I like it- I love it and if I don’t – at least I know what I don’t want.”
