ST. LOUIS – Alderwoman Cara Spencer has formally announced her campaign for St. Louis Mayor.

Spencer will run for office against the incumbent mayor, Tishaura Jones, in the 2025 St. Louis mayoral election.

This sets the stage for a political rematch. Jones and Spencer both campaigned for the mayor’s office in 2021. Jones defeated Spencer by around 2,300 votes out of more than 58,000 cast, a margin of less than 4%.

Spencer shared of her announcement on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. She announced a campaign kickoff party on June 4 from 5-7 p.m. at the Post Building at 900 N. Tucker Boulevard.

Spencer has been vocal about changes to public safety, roads and vacant properties around St. Louis.

“Everywhere we look, the city is failing to do its most basic jobs,” said Spencer in an email campaign announcement. “Too many of the promises that were made three years ago haven’t been fulfilled. That’s why, after much encouragement, I have decided to run for mayor.”

Jones also announced her campaign for re-election last week. She tells FOX 2 she feels she’s in a better position now than she was in 2021, citing decreases in crime during her first term.

Jones told a crowd at the Third Degree Glass Factory that her push for better pay and places to live in every part of the city is working.
