Car, MetroLink train collide near Washington Park station. Car bursts into flames

A car collided with a MetroLink train Sunday afternoon near the Washington Park station, officials said.

The driver of the car had minor injuries, and initial reports say there were no injuries to passengers on the MetroLink, according to East St. Louis Police Chief Kendall Perry.

The car burst into flames from the impact, Perry confirmed. “Officers are still on scene,” Perry said.

MetroLink, in a late afternoon statement, said the train was not operating between Emerson Park and Fairview Heights after the accident. “MetroLink Station Shuttles are currently transporting passengers by bus between the Emerson Park, JJK Center, Washington Park and Fairview Heights Stations,” the statement said. “ Passengers traveling through this area may experience delays of up to 60 minutes.”
