Here are the car-free streets in NYC for Earth Day this weekend

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — New York City is gearing up to celebrate a car-free Earth Day and launching its annual Open Streets program.

53 streets and plazas will be car-free on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., according to the city’s Department of Transportation. The streets and plazas will be filled with art, music, and programming for six hours.

Citi Bike will also offer free 30-minute rides on a classic Citi Bike for the whole day. Riders must use the CARFREE24 in the Citi Bike app, to take advantage of the promotion.

This year’s Open Streets boasts a larger celebration than last year’s which featured 30 streets for five hours.

The seven signature locations organized by Open Streets include:

Manhattan

  • Dyckman Street from Broadway to La Marina

  • St. Nicholas Avenue from 181st Street to 190th Street

  • Broadway from East 17th Street to West 46th Street

Brooklyn

  • Fifth Avenue from 40th Street to 45th Street

The Bronx

  • East 188th Street from East Fordham Road to Grand Concourse

  • Creston Avenue from East 188th Street to East Fordham Road

Staten Island

  • Port Richmond Avenue from Post Avenue to Castleton Avenue

“As part of the city’s largest-ever Car-Free Earth Day celebration, will be hosting programming, music, and other activities at dozens of car-free streets around New York City,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “And new, temporary public art will help us remember: We only have one planet — and we must all do our part to reduce our carbon footprint and respect our environment.”
