Car crashing into pole knocks out power to 2,000 in University area: Officials

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Nearly 2,000 customers are without power Friday afternoon in the University area after a car crashed into a pole.

According to Duke Energy officials, the outage occurred around 3:40 p.m. May 24. It’s expected to be restored by 6:45 p.m.  Outbound lanes of North Tryon Street are closed at Institute Circle Drive, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say, and that nearby traffic signals are out of commission.

Medic officials say a car accident in the area sent one person to the hospital. The person has serious injuries.

As of 4:20 p.m., traffic was backed up on North Tryon in both directions in between JW Clay Boulevard and the Mallard Creek Greenway bridge
