Car crashes into several garages, structures condemned

ST. LOUIS – One resident is feeling thankful that nobody was injured after a driver slammed into multiple garages in the South Grand neighborhood Friday morning.

Kayla Brinkley woke up in the 3800 block of Wyoming St. to the sounds of what she thought was a garbage truck but turned out to be someone crashing into her garage.

“We were going through our backyard to our garage. I opened the door to the garage and there was a vehicle in the garage that had driven through our front garage door and was buried into the wall of our neighbor’s garage,” Brinkley said. “It was pretty wild.”

The driver of the Dodge Durango destroyed four garages in total.

“Unfortunately, it took a couple of calls to get EMS and the police to get them to come out and check (the driver) out,” Brinkley said. “That was what we were most worried about… she did get a bump on the head and so I think it was important to get her checked out.”

Brinkley said the driver appeared to be in her 30s and was given three tickets but not arrested for the crash.

The city condemned the structures and owners are left with tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

“What I think is frustrating about the situation is that we have a lot of drivers with expired plates and suspended licenses in the city, and it’s just not being addressed,” Brinkley said. “That can be a little frustrating to deal with that, especially when you have property damage as a result of people, unfortunately, not making very good decisions.”
