Capital Pride Parade route skips Dupont neighborhood in 2024

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Capital Pride Alliance (CPA) said the annual Pride celebration, which takes place in from May 31 to June 9 this year, will feature a new parade route for 2024.

CPA said on its website that the new route will not be going through the historic Dupont neighborhood. The information provided on the site noted that the Capital Pride Alliance was “excited” that its annual block party would remain on 17th Street in Northwest with a family area at Stead Park.

DC’s Capital Pride announces 2024 theme

Marquia Parnell with Capital Pride Alliance explained that the change in the route is because the parade has grown each year, attracting between 150,000 to 200,000 spectators and participants. The group anticipates the volume to increase this year and next year.

Parnell said the change also gives Capital Pride Alliance the chance to do a test run of the route ahead of the 50th celebration of Pride in D.C. in 2025 when the city also will host WorldPride.

Staging for the parade is on 15th Street NW from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Step off will be at 14th Street at T Street NW at 3 p.m. with the parade finishing at Pennsylvania Avenue at 9th Street NW.

Between the start and finish, the new route takes participants straight down 14th Street NW, then turning left onto Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
