Cannabis Company Supports Legendary Surf Filmmaker Greg Browning in ALS Fight
Last year, news broke that surf filmmaker and Momentum Generation alum Greg Browning was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), aka Lou Gehrig’s disease. Accordingly, the surf world rallied with a crowdfunding campaign to support.
And now, adding a spark to the support of the progressive, slow-burning fight that is ALS, a cannabis company has emerged to help. Gelato Canna Co. has debuted "Geebs" – a nickname for Browning – featuring a line of pre-rolls and edibles with portions of the profits going to Browning and the battle against ALS on the whole.
“I was completely taken by surprise when George [Sadler, Gelato CEO] presented the Geebs products to me in front of our friends,” said Browning. “It’s not easy to navigate a diagnosis like this, but knowing I have so much support in the surfing community, film community and now the cannabis community truly makes me realize how lucky I am. I hope anyone dealing with their own health struggles can find comfort with cannabis, including Geebs.”
Studies have shown that cannabis can help with ALS treatment, especially when it comes to spasticity (stiff muscles). According to a 2019 report from the National Library of Medicine, “THC:CBD may serve as a valuable addition in the spectrum of symptomatic therapy in ALS.”
Browning, who transitioned from his career as a pro surfer into surf filmmaker, is perhaps most celebrated for his Drive Thru series. From Australia, to Japan, to Europe, and beyond, the series featured a motley crew of pro surfers – Kelly Slater, Benji Weatherly, Donavon Frankenreiter, Kalani Robb, and others – all jam-packed in a van as they toured the local sites and waves, immersed themselves in the culture, and laughed like schoolgirls along the way.
Most recently, Browning was honored with a spot on the Surfer’s Walk of Fame in his hometown of Hermosa Beach, California.
“I dreamed about being alongside of my heroes growing up,” he said. “We have the worst waves in the world in the South Bay. But we have some of the best surfers. I feel, like, ‘wow…now I’m part of this group.’”
