Camping out could be a great option for those watching the eclipse in Avon Lake

AVON LAKE, Ohio (WJW) — Along the eclipse path of totality in Ohio, Avon Lake boasts one of the best-predicted views of the phenomenon. The city is offering RV, camper and tent camping spaces for rent at select city parks to help make room for the expected population boom.

“We’re on center line, totality’s best seat, and a great opportunity to see what Avon Lake has to offer,” said Erin Fach, Avon Parks and Recreation Director.

Fach said camping out for the eclipse is a fun and necessary way to watch April 8, given hotels and rental properties nearby are nearly full.

“All the hotels, and rentals are pretty much selling out,” he said. “Those who do want to take it in by either RV or camper or even tent camping just want to make those accessible for folks, try to draw them into Avon Lake have a great experience.”

Renting a spot at the parks includes eclipse glasses, overnight parking, 24-hour security and shuttle access to restaurants and shops across Avon Lake. Fach said tent camping is most popular at the moment, however both options are about 50% booked. The city has 100 RV spots available and up to 50 spots for tent camping.

Eclipse chasers can book RV and camper spots at Miller Road Park for a 3-night minimum stay at $375. Tent campers will get a 20 by 20 spot at Weiss Field for a minimum 2-night stay for $150.

“We have lots of activities going on all weekend so just really trying to make Avon Lake shine,” said Fach. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event so we’re really excited to be part of it.”
