Calumet City man charged with attempted murder in February shooting in Champaign

Apr. 26—URBANA — A Calumet City man has been ordered to remain in jail ahead of his trial on charges of attempted murder for allegedly shooting his cousin multiple times in February in Champaign.

Champaign County Judge Brett Olmstead ruled Thursday that Allen Williams, 32, must remain in jail after he was arraigned on charged of attempted first-degree murder.

The charges stem from a Feb. 19 incident where Champaign police responded to a report of shots fired in the 700 block of West Vine Street, State's Attorney Julia Rietz said.

On scene, officers located bullet casings and learned that a man had been taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana with multiple gunshot wounds to his face, hand and torso.

Police said that victim told them he was getting into his car when Williams, who is his cousin, approached him and shot him multiple times. He told police that he and his cousin have had ongoing disagreements for years.

Williams is currently on federal parole for a 2019 conviction of possession of firearm ammunition.

Olmstead granted the state's request to have Williams detained without objection from the public defender's office in light of a federal hold placed on him.
