Calf Creek Recreation Site to close for construction this summer

KANAB, Utah (ABC4) — With its towering waterfall crashing onto desert sandstone, the Calf Creek Recreation Site is one of the most beloved hiking areas in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

However, this iconic Utah destination will be closed for several weeks this summer as crews work various construction projects to improve the area.

The Bureau of Land Management announced Friday that the recreation site is set to close on July 8. The agency explained that the full closure is necessary as the movement of heavy machinery could pose a risk to visitors.

“We appreciate the public’s patience as we enhance visitor infrastructure in this area,” Paria River District Manager Harry Barber said in a statement.

The closure of the Calf Creek Recreation Site is expected to last up to two months, meaning the area could reopen come early September. Updates on the project will be posted to the monument’s website.

The construction will bring improvements and repairs to the area’s campground, install new shade shelters, new retaining walls along the creek, and a water play area.

Falyn Owens, the executive director of the Garfield County Office of Tourism, said that while the construction is underway, visitors can still see plenty of public land destinations in Bryce Canyon Country.

The Calf Creek Recreation Site is located roughly 12 miles south of Boulder, Utah, and 60 miles east of Bryce Canyon National Park.
