NEW YORK (PIX11) – The busiest subway line in New York City, the No. 6 train, will receive $33 million in new funding, Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer announced on Thursday.

The new funds will allow the MTA to install a stormwater drainage system at Westchester Yard in the Bronx, where subway cars are stored.

“Millions of New Yorkers and visitors rely on the No. 6 line, so it is essential that we invest in infrastructure to ensure it operates at peak efficiency,” Schumer said.

The MTA estimates the No. 6 train carries roughly 140 million passengers per year. The subway line is prone to flash flooding during heavy rainfall, which can lead to train derailments and service delays, officials said.

“Every New Yorker knows the 6 is a direct route to major job, medical, educational, and cultural hubs, and when the train is not running on time, it can derail the city’s activity,” Gillibrand said. “This funding will support the installation of a complete stormwater drainage system at Westchester Yard to help keep the 6 lines right on track.”

Westchester Yard contains 49 train cars that run up and down the No. 6 train line, officials said.
