Bus driver ignored medical emergency leading to Florida teen’s death, family says

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The family of a 15-year-old boy who died after experiencing a medical emergency on a school bus are saying the driver of the bus ignored signs before the boy’s death, according to NBC affiliate WESH.

On Wednesday, the parents of the teen held a press conference, revealing the boy showed signs of irregular breathing before getting onto the bus. The parents also said the driver failed to see the signs and ignored their daughter’s attempts to get the driver to stop and give her brother medical attention.

WESH reported the driver eventually stopped the bus, but only after an unrelated altercation on the bus took place. The teen was taken to the hospital by the Orlando Fire Department and was later pronounced dead.

The family said the boy did not have an ongoing medical issue and described him as active.

Orlando police reportedly said it is unclear what the cause of death is, and said the incident is under review.

The family said they are awaiting the autopsy report and are also conducting their own investigation, WESH reported.
