Buffalo man admits to attempted burglary, assaulting firefighters

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man pleaded guilty last week to two separate indictments for an attempted burglary and assaulting firefighters who were attempting to give him aid, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

Officials said on Aug. 16, 2022, 43-year-old Titus D. Smith pushed an air conditioner out of a window in an apartment on Auburn Avenue in order to gain entrance. He and another individual left with two bags of belongings from the home.

Less than a month later, on Sep. 11, 2022, officials said firefighters responded to a residence on 14th Street because Smith required medical assistance. He slashed one of them with broken glass, hit another with a toilet lid, and punched the third in the eye as they attempted to give him aid. All three were taken to ECMC. Smith was also taken to ECMC for evaluation.

Smith pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted burglary and second-degree assault charges. He faces twelve years to life in prison and remains held without bail.
