Buffalo man accused of stealing $176K from elderly family member

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man was arraigned Tuesday morning after allegedly depositing over $176,000 into his personal checking account that was meant for his elderly family member, according to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.

Officials said in January 2022, a 72-year-old had to be hospitalized after a fire broke out in his Buffalo home. The defendant, 35-year-old Jamire Y. Barber, served as the principle point of contact for the homeowner’s insurance claim.

It is alleged that in April of 2022, Barber received a check worth $176,410.10 that was intended for the victim. He allegedly deposited the check into his own account and spent the next four months purchasing designer clothing, jewelry, and vehicles and participating in online sports gambling, according to officials.

Barber was charged with one count of second-degree grand larceny and is scheduled to return to court on May 28 for a pre-trial conference. He was held without bail.
