Three fires across Westchester displace several families Thursday

Three separate house fires in Westchester displaced over 40 residents in total Thursday evening.

The string of fires started when a fire started in the basement of a Buchanan home on Thursday afternoon, leaving 10 people displaced, including two children.

Buchanan Engine Co. said in a Facebook post the fire started in the basement of 148 Lindsey Avenue just after 1 p.m. and spread to the attic, destroying the interior of the home.

Units were on the scene for over three hours to control the fire, including Verplanck, Montrose, Croton-on-Hudson, Millwood, Continental Village and Yorktown fire departments.

Firefighters said none of the residents were inside the house at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

Red Cross Metro New York said it was on the scene to assist the displaced in finding temporary housing. Eight adults, two children and three dogs were registered for emergency assistance.

Fire in White Plains

At around 5:15 p.m., a fire broke out in a room of a White Plains boarding house, leaving a dozen adults and one child displaced.

White Plains Fire Department Assistant Chief Claudio Petriccione said the fire broke out around at 131 S. Broadway near the back of the home.

Petriccione said they arrived on the scene quickly and found that the fire was confined to one bedroom and a hallway. Firefighters were able to save about three-quarters of the building.

All residents of the boarding house were required to be evacuated. Red Cross also responded to this scene to assist the residents that were displaced.

Petriccione said the residents will stay at the Sonesta in White Plains until water damage to the house is repaired.

Yonkers fire

The last fire happened at around 8:30 p.m. at an apartment building in Yonkers.

Yonkers Fire Department Deputy Chief Joseph Citrone said the fire broke out in a third floor apartment at 135 Hawthorne Ave. and made significant damage to the unit. He said fire was seen from two of the windows in the unit.

The building was deemed unsafe after the incident and over 20 people had to be evacuated, Citrone said.

One person was trapped inside but was rescued. No civilian injuries were reported but four firefighters were treated for minor injuries.

Red Cross Metro New York said 15 adults and three children received assistance in finding temporary housing.

The cause of all three fires are still under investigation.
