Brush fire forces closure of state Route 87 near Fountain Hills

A brush fire closed a highway south of Fountain Hills on Monday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The fire broke out along state Route 87 near Shea Boulevard on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near its border with Fountain Hills, causing the southbound lanes to close while crews fought the fire, ADOT said.

Several homes on the Fountain Hills side of the roadway were evacuated as a precaution, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office officials said.

As of Monday afternoon, the left southbound lane was open, ADOT announced in an update.

The size and cause of the fire were unknown. Officials did not disclose when all traffic lanes would reopen.
