Phase two of the Marcus Garvey Extension will bring 287 new apartments to the area, with a focus on supporting vulnerable populations.

Councilwoman Darlene Mealy, who represents Brownsville, expressed her excitement about the project’s ability to serve those in need. “We have to think about those who are coming back,” she said, referring to formerly incarcerated individuals. “This project ensures they have access to affordable housing and the support they need to succeed.”

The development will feature 88 units specifically designed for formerly incarcerated residents and 55 units for those who have experienced homelessness. These apartments will provide a fresh start and on-site supportive services to help residents rebuild their lives.

The Marcus Garvey Extension goes beyond just providing housing. The project incorporates environmentally-friendly features like geothermal heating and cooling systems. Additionally, Councilwoman Mealy highlighted plans to revitalize the surrounding area.

“Livonia Avenue will be remodeled to be well-lit and safe,” she explained. “We’re also addressing vacant lots to create a more vibrant community.”

Elaine Braithwaite, Managing Director at L&M Development Partners, praised the project’s continuity. “We completed the first phase of Marcus Garvey back in 2022,” she said. “We have a strong partnership with L&M Builders Group, and we’re confident they’ll deliver phase two on time and on budget.”

With a completion date set for 2026, the Marcus Garvey Extension Phase 2 development signifies a new era for Brownsville. It represents a commitment to affordable housing, community support, and environmental responsibility. As Councilwoman Mealy concluded, “As long as this development provides attainable housing for the average person, Brownsville will continue to thrive.”
