Have you had the opportunity to catch the cast for the new Alamogordo Music Theatre show, 'RENT'?

The cast will open the Flickinger Center located at 1110 New York Avenue on March 22 at 7 p.m.

Director Rosie Daffern is ecstatic for the show to reach audiences, and called it one of her favorite productions.

"We are, as a cast all together, where it's just an all-around happy feel because of how much the songs resonate with all of us," Daffern said. "You can just tell how much excitement we all have. We now have a TikTok because of it. It has just been so fun."

The production is based on Puccini's La Boheme, adapted by Jonathan Larson as a musical to follow a group of struggling arts for a year in New York's Lower East Side, read the Alamogordo Music Theatre website. The entire production is set during the nations struggle with HIV/AIDS.

Dafern said she understands there may be a little bit of backlash from residents in the community who don't agree with some of the aspects of the play but she ultimately hopes that is not the case.

"It's going to touch on the superficial plot of rent but it's also going to touch on so many things that we deal with today. I hope people take that home with them as well," Daffern said. "It's going to touch on homelessness, losing someone and the opening scene can touch on some things for the LGBTQ community."

She said the play is recommended for those who are 18 or older as there will be graphic scenes.

"It's really depending on the consumer. We will have poster warnings outside to let them know that it is 18 plus because of the explicit language and short nudity act to follow," she said. "But we let you know so there aren't any walk outs or anything."

Daffern said she has high hopes that the community will love this production but if they can't catch the cast for RENT, she said another production is planned for fall.

"We just want people to go and experience even the music itself, the score, I just don't have any words to explain the music, but you would have to experience for yourself in a live theater," she said. "When I suggested doing RENT in the first place, I got some people saying there may be a bit of backlash but the theme all in all is love, I just want people to give it a chance."

"The theme is love, no matter what lifestyle you have or what religion you follow, or if you think we are making a statement, we are not. We are not making a statement. We just really love this show and wanted to bring the production of RENT to Alamogordo."
