Britain's Got Talent judge Simon Cowell has explained why viewers saw him wearing red-tinted glasses on the show when it returned over the weekend.

The music mogul and TV personality has been sporting the shades on America's Got Talent already, but fans who just watch the British version were left wondering if there was a reason for them.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Simon explained: "The red glasses are because I have lights in my eyes all day long and it's like a laser and I get migraines and that's like a filter. They actually do work."

He previously made an Instagram post explaining that his migraines were the "mystery illness" that was reported that caused him to miss some auditions.

"I just found out according to the internet, I have a 'mystery illness'. For anyone concerned, I missed two auditions at the end of one day, two weeks ago, because I do get migraines after long days in the filming lights... This is why I wear these glasses!"

In the same interview, Simon also explained why he's started to wear thermals rather than the signature T-shirts he would pair with his high trousers.

"It's basically underwear, they are like if you go skiing, it's like thermals. It's so cold in the theatre I thought, 'Y'know what, I'm just going to wear thermals this year.'

"I didn't plan to. I just turned up and it was so cold and someone said, 'Oh that looks good' so I thought, 'OK I'll be fine, I'll wear it'."

The return of Britain's Got Talent this weekend saw not one, not two, but three acts awarded the Golden Buzzer, meaning they are straight through the live semi-finals.

Britain's Got Talent airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
