Bristol schools superintendent is set to retire. Here’s a look back at her 35-year career

Bristol Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Catherine Carbone will be retiring at the end of the school year, she announced Friday in a letter to families.

Carbone, who has held the role since 2019, said her retirement ends a 35-year career in education, both in Bristol and other area towns. Carbone previously taught science in East Hartford, then went on to become an assistant principal before that city made her principal of East Hartford Middle School in 2003. She left three years later to run Chippens Hill Middle School, where she stayed for seven years before taking a senior administrative post in Hartford’s school system. From there Bristol recruited her as second in command to Sue Moreau, then promoted her when Moreau departed.

In her farewell letter, Carbone hailed partnerships that brought the district awards in arts, sports and academics and expressed gratitude to colleagues, teachers, families and students.

“I am forever grateful to our BPS families, community, and the City of Bristol for partnering with us throughout my tenure. Thank you for trusting us with the education of your precious children, a responsibility that I have carried with honor and humility,” she wrote.

Though her retirement is effective July 2, Carbone will be departing before that, according to her letter.

“To accommodate the Board of Education’s request and transition efforts, the Commissioners have asked me to begin my sabbatical on May 15, 2024,” she said.
