Brides Everywhere Are Banning This One Controversial Thing From Their Weddings

From Country Living

We're loathe to leave home without our cell phones, especially on a photo-worthy occasion such as a wedding. People are excited to be invited to such a momentous event, so it makes sense they would want to capture every special moment on camera.

But now, brides and grooms are asking their guests to put away their phones and cameras until after the ceremony. According to a recent Pinterest report on the top wedding trends of the year, unplugged ceremonies are on the rise-and for good reason. "As couples look to celebrate their special day, they want to remember moments with friends and family by practicing being 'in-the-moment' and asking guests to ditch their cameras and phones," wrote wedding photographer Melanie Soleil in a blog post that has been trending on Pinterest.

As social media has increased in popularity, we've grown accustomed to sharing what we're doing (on platforms like Facebook and Instagram), whether it's something average like eating dinner or an exciting life event. Some couples even choose to create their own wedding hashtag to encourage guests to take photos and post them online.

But brides have had enough. What guests may not realize is that when they take their cell phones out to record a ceremony, they're actually interfering with the professional photographer's job. A photograph of the bride and groom saying "I do" can quickly be ruined by people holding up cell phones in the background.

Pinterest isn't the only one to notice this trend. Photographer Thomas Stewart posted a rant about cell phones at weddings earlier this year that went viral. His photo of a bride walking down the aisle was completely ruined by a handful of guests trying to take their own pictures.

"Look at this photo. This groom had to lean out past the aisle just to see his bride approaching. Why? Because guests with their phones were in the aisle and in his way," he wrote.

Another reason to embrace this trend? Couples have been getting creative, incorporating cute signs that kindly ask guests to put their phones away into their ceremony's decor.
