UPDATE: UIPD shares details on armed woman

Update at 9:12 a.m.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — University of Illinois Police shared new details on the armed woman near Second and Green Streets Friday morning.

Spokesperson for UIPD Pat Wade told WCIA that at 5:54 a.m., UIPD received a report that a woman was naked and acting erratically, possibly in need of medical attention in the area. Both police and medical responders were dispatched to the scene.

When the first officer arrived, they observed the the woman was holding a knife. Officers then contained her to a small area and started speaking with her in attempt to de-escalate the situation. The first Illini-Alert was then sent out to the campus community, urging that they avoid the area.

At some point while police were talking with the woman, she dropped the knife. First responders then moved in to provide medical assistance.

By 8:30 a.m., the scene was determined safe and an Illini-Alert was sent out giving campus community the all-clear to resume normal activities.

The UIPD were assisted by police officers from both the Urbana and Champaign Police Departments, including a crisis negotiator and a behavioral health detective.

“UIPD is thankful for the quick response and continued collaboration with community partners,” Wade added.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — In an Illini-Alert, University of Illinois Police say the emergency has ended and it is now safe to resume regular activities.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — University of Illinois Police announced they have the suspect contained. In an Illini-Alert they say there is no broader threat to the community, but everyone should continue to avoid the area.


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — University of Illinois police are warning drivers to avoid the area of Third and Green streets. They sent out an Illini-Alert at 6:17 this morning saying there is a subject armed with sharp objects. They sent out another alert at 6:41 saying they are on scene and are addressing the situation.
