Boyd Drive shooting investigated as murder

This story will be updated as more information is available.

A man was found shot to death April 1 on Boyd Drive and police are investigating the death as a murder.

Carlsbad police were called at about 10:20 p.m. to the scene in the 1900 block of Boyd Drive, and found the 26-year-old Carlsbad man “unresponsive,” and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, read a news release from the Carlsbad Police Department.

Emergency personnel determined the man died from his wounds at the scene, the release read.

The incident remained under investigation as of Friday. Police did not initially release the name of the deceased, nor a detailed description of his injuries or any information on potential suspects or witnesses.

Carlsbad police Capt. Jessie Rodriguez said the shooting did not appear accidental and that the "circumstances are suspicious."

Police notified the family of the man, Rodriguez said, but his name was being withheld as a person of interest was being pursued. Rodriguez said no official suspect was yet identified.

The incident was reported by a person who noticed the man lying in the road in a remote area on Boyd Drive, near a mobile home park, Rodriguez said.

He said reactions to the incident from the people interviewed so far were suspicious in that no one "seemed surprised" by the shooting. He said police have talked to family and acquaintances of the deceased, but that they appeared "nonchalant" about the death and lacked emotion.

"It does appear the people we assumed would be very concerned about the passing have acted in a way that indicates they know more than they are saying," Rodriguez said. "The people we've talked to have not reacted how we would expect them to."

He urged others in the area to come forward with more potential information, surveillance footage or any detail to "fill in the gaps."

Anyone with information was asked to call the police department at 575-885-2111 or Detective Ryan Kinnikin at extension 2216.
