EAST ELMHURST, Queens (PIX11) – An 8-year-old boy was hit and killed by a pickup truck while walking with his mother and brother in a crosswalk in Queens Wednesday, police said.

The crash happened at the intersection of 31st Avenue and 100th Street in East Elmhurst around 4:15 p.m., according to the NYPD.

The pickup truck driver was turning left from 31st Avenue onto 100th Street, failed to yield, and hit the 8-year-old and his 10-year-old brother, according to NYPD Chief of Transportation Philip Rivera.

The 8-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The 10-year-old boy suffered a wrist injury. The 37-year-old mother was not hurt, according to police.

The 52-year-old driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene after the crash and was the first person to call 911, according to Rivera. The driver was taken into custody and will be charged, Rivera said.

“This incident, as tragic as it is, was avoidable,” Rivera said. “When making turns, especially left turns, you must always yield to both vehicles and pedestrians. Take an extra second. Make sure the intersection and the crosswalk is clear before completing your turn. Because of this poor decision, a family trying to enjoy a beautiful day will never be the same.”
