Bourne election is set for May 21. Who's running and who is not.

Editor's note: The location of two precincts for voting was corrected on May 13, 2024.

BUZZARDS BAYBourne Town Clerk Barry Johnson faces no opponent in the annual town election May 21 but is gravely concerned about about six spots on the ballot with no candidates and the likelihood of numerous write-ins.

The ballot does offer contested races: Select Board and the Bourne Recreation Authority.

Positions without candidates include constable, two seats on the Board of Health, a library trustee slot and a Main Street Community Center trustee post. A School Board term also needs a candidate.

He said vacancies will be decided by ballot write-ins.

“It’s obvious,” he said. “Write-ins will be needed, and that will make for a longer day at the polls.”

Contested races involve two boards

Contested races, meanwhile, involve a four-way race for two Select Board seats and a similar set-up for Bourne Recreation Authority terms.

The ballot initially had five Select Board candidates: incumbent Mary Jane Mastrangelo, seeking a third term, former Bourne Public Works Director Shawn Patterson, Boston-based paralegal Daniel Degan, Planning Board member Jeanne Azarovitz and John ‘Jack’ MacDonald, a former historical society president.

On April 8, Patterson formally withdrew from ballot consideration, citing job and time constraints. If Azarovitz were elected to the Select Board, that would create a Planning Board vacancy.

Select Board member Jared MacDonald did not seek a third term.

Mastrangelo, the former finance committee chair, said she is campaigning with political signs, conversations with village civic group members and participation at a candidates night. Newcomer Degan is politically aligned with his uncle, former Public Works Director Patterson.

MacDonald, meanwhile, is best known for his historical preservation and anti-demolition efforts to save two Cape Cod information booths from the wrecking ball. Azarovitz is well known for her Planning Board work and Designer Selection Committee work involving Main Street aesthetics.

Recreation Authority directors Louis Gallo and Joseph Klucevsek seek re-election. Gallo is an authority veteran; Klucevsek was recently appointed to the panel by the select board. The opponents are Robert Buckley III and Christopher McCarthy in second attempts to win authority seats.

The authority is a state-chartered entity with one member appointed by the governor. Members administer operations on both sides of the canal; notably Scenic Park in Buzzards Bay and the Gallo Ice Arena at Bourne village. The federal land involved is consigned to the Army Corps of Engineers.

The authority in recent years has undertaken efforts to expand and modernize the rink entrance and lobby.
