Bourbon County residents eligible for free tetanus vaccines, amidst flooding impact

FORT SCOTT, Kan. — Officials with the “SEK Multi-County Health Department” are providing free tetanus vaccines to anyone impacted by the storms or floods in Bourbon County over the weekend.

Branches of the health department – in both Fort Scott and Iola – are participating thanks to state funding that’s in place for emergencies, like these.

The lead nurse at the Fort Scott location told us, today, that tetanus vaccines are recommended if anyone spent any time navigating through flood waters – and even if all they got was a small scratch.

“So a lot of people, who are hands-on in the flood water, they don’t think twice about it, but they have cuts, they get cuts, and they do need to be protected against Tetanus,” said Hannah Geneva, Bourbon County Health Nurse.

Residents can contact either the “Fort Scott” or “Iola” location if they want to schedule an appointment for a vaccine.

Resources are limited – and on a first-come first-served basis.
