Books, beer and bud: These new businesses are coming to Stanislaus County in 2024

There’s a lot to catch up on in the business world, Stanislaus County.

The time between the departure of The Modesto Bee’s longtime business beat reporter and when a new reporter stepped in to fill the position (it’s me, hi) saw several businesses making plans to establish themselves in the region.

Thank technology for the notes app on my iPhone because I’ve been keeping track as best as I can of the “coming soon” signs I’ve seen and heard you all talking about on social media.

Do you own a business or know of a business that is opening soon in Stanislaus County and is missing from this list? Email dwilliams@modbee.com.

What’s coming to Stanislaus County?

Bookish, 811 W. Roseburg Ave. in Modesto, is an indie bookstore and cafe that will sell new and used books, as well as coffee. A husband-and-wife duo put their idea to fruition after Yesterday’s Books closed in late 2022, leaving Modesto without an independently owned place to buy reading material. Bookish announced Monday that the opening day will be April 4. The opening weekend schedule will include events, live music and “a whole lotta books,” according to its Instagram account.

Black Orchid, 2101 Sylvan Ave., Suite 106A, in Modesto, is a family-owned craft brewery opening in the spring. Some of the beers that will be on the initial menu include German hefeweizen, German altbier, hazy India pale ale, cream ale and oatmeal stout. Eventually, brews unique to Black Orchid, like a Thai tea stout and a jackfruit hazy IPA, will be served. The brewery also will host events like beer-making classes, trivia nights, candle making, yoga and live music.

Costco, at Claribel and Oakdale roads in Riverbank, is under construction and expected to open sometime midyear. Costco will serve as an anchor store in a new retail complex, Crossroads West, that will include other businesses and restaurants.

Evergreen Market, 101 E. Glenwood Ave. in Turlock, is a cannabis retail dispensary that submitted an application with the city of Turlock’s Planning Division and was approved on April 6, 2023. The application noted the hours of operation will be seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The dispensary anticipates opening in the spring, the Turlock Journal reported.

Penny University, 1202 J St. in Modesto, is a mobile coffee company that can be found at the Modesto Farmers Market and is establishing itself in a brick and mortar location in the spring. The inspiration behind the name are the first London coffee houses in the 17th century — penny universities. “The cost only being one cent brought together people from different social classes and economic backgrounds,” Penny University’s website says. “We have hopes that we can foster community and meaningful conversation when you come visit us.”

Teaspoon, 3900 Pelandale Ave., Suite 130, in Modesto, is a chain boba tea shop that also serves energy drinks, lemonades, smoothies, coffee and pastries. The soft opening for the store is Wednesday, March 6.

The Rice Corner, 2105 Fulkerth Road in Turlock, is an Asian bistro under construction. The business is not on social media, but an Instagram post made by the city of Turlock says the restaurant will be “opening soon.” A plumbing inspection was made at the restaurant by the Stanislaus County Environmental Resources Department on Tuesday. The report noted construction was approved to continue.
