Bobby Charles Crawford gets 54 year sentence for attempted murder, other charges in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) – After running from police and barricading himself inside a vehicle, 47-year-old Bobby Charles Crawford has now been sentenced to 54 years behind bars.

In 2023, Crawford had a warrant out for his arrest. A New Mexico State Police officer began following a white Chevy Suburban they suspected belonged to Crawford. Las Cruces Police arrived, but Crawford fled through a residential neighborhood, according to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Crawford eventually fired a gun at a police vehicle, and officers returned fire. Crawford barricaded himself, but the event ended after Crawford surrendered, the District Attorney’s Office said.

A Las Cruces jury convicted Bobby Charles Crawford of two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, one count of aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer and shooting at or from a motor vehicle.

“Crawford has a long history of criminal conduct. In this case, officers were within microseconds and millimeters of certain death,” District Attorney Gerald Byers said in a press release. “Those police officers involved, dedicated their lives to keep the public safe from a dangerous criminal. The jury verdict demonstrated that Doña Ana County juries will assign accountability for proven criminal behavior. The sentencing reflects that this dangerous convict will not pose a future threat to the public or public servants.”

The assistant district attorney asked the court to give Crawford the maximum sentence of 95 years. Crawford asked the court for leniency, claiming he is terminally ill.
