Blue Ridge Parkway launches ‘Rule the Ridge’ to highlight motorcycle safety

VIRGINIA/ NORTH CAROLINA (WFXR) — In recognition of Motorcycle Safety Month, National Park Service (NPS) Officials are kicking off its new safety campaign, “Rule the Ridge.”

Park officials say the campaign is designed to remind motorcycles that a ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway is not like most roads.

In fact, the parkway has the highest number of motorcycle deaths and injuries in the NPS. In 2023, the Blue Ridge Parkway Law Enforcement Rangers responded to nearly 400 crashes and 83 involved motorcycles.

“Motorists need to understand that the Parkway is designed differently than other roads they may be used to,” said Acting Chief Ranger Deb Flowers. “In addition to sharing the road with cars, bicyclists, and hikers, the Parkway’s narrow and soft shoulders, long sweeping curves, and tight curves present unique challenges to riders.”

After completing a thorough review of incident data, park officials, the NPS Traffic Safety Coalition, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) coordinated to create the “Rule The Ridge” campaign.

Park officials are reminding riders to:

  • Ride in single file: Remember to ride single file and maintain a safe following distance to provide better reaction times.

  • Keep eyes always on the road: Keep your focus on navigating the route. Take advantage of the many overlooks to enjoy views safely. Watch for many hazards you may encounter and practice safe, defensive driving.

  • Ride in the center of lane position #2: Given the park’s design, the center position offers the safest path for optimal maneuverability.

The parkway’s social media platform will also highlight videos and safety-related content.
