BLOG: Severe storms bring rain to Central Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The KXAN First Warning Weather team is tracking the risk of scattered severe storms throughout Central Texas Thursday.

10:30 p.m.

Austin Energy is reporting 2,236 outages, according to the utility’s outage map.

7:45 p.m.

Bluebonnet Electric said it is assessing “catastrophic damage” to the electric grid from today’s storms in its service area.

The utility company said it continues working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power

“Reports indicate storms caused trees and debris to fall or blow into power lines, poles and other equipment. We will provide updates throughout this outage event.”

6:45 p.m.

“All roads are currently open except for Cameron Rd near Parmer Ln and Spicewood Springs Rd #1-7,” FEWS said.

Baby rabbit saved from pool by local fireman during downpour

5:44 p.m.

Cameron Road near East Parmer Lane in northeast Austin is closed due to flooding, according to the City of Austin Flood Early Warning System (FEWS).

5:25 p.m.

Local Austin fireman Michael Reese jumped quickly into action to rescue a baby rabbit from a pool after a heavy downpour of rain. He saw the baby rabbit from a distance and said he had to save it. Reese then got his pool cleaning net and was able to save the baby rabbit.

5:24 p.m.

“Alert: Multiple #CapMetro rail arms are currently down. The malfunction is caused by the impacts of the recent weather. We are aware of the issue and have crews working to fix the problem.

Please do not try to manually move the crossing guards. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.” CapMetro posted on social media.

5:21 p.m.

Spicewood Springs Road (#1-7) between Loop 360 and Old Lampasas Trail in northwest Austin is closed due to flooding, according to the City of Austin Flood Early Warning System.

5:18 p.m.

Austin Energy spokesperson Matt Mitchell said high winds, blowing tree limbs and vegetation into power lines have caused outages today.

The total number of customers without power is 98.24%, with 98 active outages and 9,880 total affected customers.

Manor Independent School District cancels high school tutorials and all fine arts events due to weather. Thursday’s performance of ‘The Little Mermaid’ at the Manor High School PAC was also canceled, the district said on social media.
