Bird flu detected in Ionia County flock

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– A commercial chicken farm in Ionia County has reported traces of avian influenza, better known as bird flu.

The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory found the presence of bird flu (HPAI) after the first report of the disease in Feb. 2022. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says this is the first detection in Ionia.

In a news release, State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland, explains how wild birds migrate during the Spring and farmers should be aware of the gems these birds carry with them.

“As the weather remains cool and wild birds continue their migration, conditions are ideal for
the virus to thrive and spread. While these conditions persist, the need to take preventative
measures will be high,” Dr. Wineland said.

“Keeping HPAI out of Michigan’s domestic animals remains a team effort, and it must be a top
priority for all.”
