Carrie Fisher's death in December 2016 came as a shock to people all over the world. Having recently reprised her role as General Leia in the Star Wars franchise, fans were looking forward to her appearance in the forthcoming sequels. It's now been announced that Fisher's death was the result of sleep apnea and several other factors, and will be listed as "undetermined" on her death certificate. Her daughter, Billie Lourd, has reacted to the news by releasing a beautifully honest statement to People regarding her mother's death.

Lourd said, "My mom battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life. She ultimately died of it. She was purposefully open in all of her work about the social stigmas surrounding these diseases." While the loss of her mother must have been heartbreaking, Lourd is determined to raise awareness of mental health issues, continuing the work Fisher so boldly did throughout her life.

Lourd's statement continued, "She talked about the shame that torments people and their families confronted by these diseases. I know my Mom, she'd want her death to encourage people to be open about their struggles. Seek help, fight for government funding for mental health programs."

She concluded her tribute, and said, "Shame and those social stigmas are the enemies of progress to solutions and ultimately a cure. Love you Momby." Clearly, Lourd is as dedicated to breaking down the stigmas related to mental health issues, just as much as Fisher was.

The Associated Press report that the coroner also noted Fisher's atherosclerotic heart disease and drug use in relation to her death, but didn't expand upon either. In light of Lourd's statement, it's seems that Fisher's addictions and mental illness affected her death. Importantly though, her memory lives on, and Lourd is ensuring that her mother's life continues to be meaningful.
