Big rig fire on Bay Bridge backs up traffic

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Bay Bridge traffic Friday was severely backed up due to a big rig fire on the westbound level of the bridge earlier. The big rig caught fire east of Treasure Island Road in San Francisco, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Earlier, the right and center lanes were blocked. All lanes reopened just before 6 p.m.

The big rig that caught fire was carrying a produce load, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The blaze was quickly extinguished by SFFD Treasure Island crews.

Motorists are being advised to expect delays and use alternate routes if possible. SFFD is worked to extinguish the smoldering load and worked with the CHP to tow the vehicle.
