The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons has revealed that his return as Sheldon Cooper was “weird”.

The star is reprising his role on-screen as the iconic character for the finale of Young Sheldon, the spin-off show detailing the physicist’s origins.

Parsons has spent the seven-season run as a narrator on Young Sheldon, but spoke to Today alongside co-star Mayim Bialik – who is also returning as Amy Farrah Fowler – about the experience of reprising his role on-screen.

“[It was] very weird [but] also very beautiful,” he began. "The Big Bang Theory was always a live-audience show and Young Sheldon is a single-camera show, and I got to do it with Mayim – we both played Sheldon and Amy from the series.

“To do it in that situation, it was just different enough that it wasn't creepy. Like going, 'What are we doing here again?!' Instead, it was really sweet. It felt like the nicest little coda to the whole experience, and I was very grateful that they asked us to do it.”

Though Young Sheldon may be ending soon, the world of The Big Bang Theory will continue after a spin-off show was announced, with the new series set to focus on Sheldon’s older brother Georgie (Montana Jordan) and wife-to-be, Mandy (Emily Osment).

“From The Big Bang Theory to Young Sheldon, the world of the Cooper family has been incredibly special to us. We're very excited to continue their stories through the eyes of Georgie and Mandy,” said creator Chuck Lorre of the new project.

Lorre had also previously teased another mystery spin-off, saying: “You don’t talk about the birth until the second trimester, I believe, is the rule. That’s a long way of saying no, I’ve got nothing to say about it other than it’s something that we are discussing.”

Young Sheldon airs on CBS in the US and E4 in the UK.
