The Dolphins’ roster has been significantly remade since free agency opened. Miami has seen an exodus of free agents but has worked quickly to fill holes with signings.

After a rapid first wave of free agency, transactions will slow down but there are still positions of need that the Dolphins could address.

Here is a look at the best remaining free agents at four positions and a breakdown of each.

Wide receiver

Who’s available: Michael Thomas, Hunter Renfrow, Tyler Boyd, Odell Beckham Jr., Marquez Valdez-Scantling

Breakdown: The Dolphins are re-signing wide receiver Braxton Berrios and have signed tight end Jonnu Smith, both of whom will serve as secondary pass-catchers in 2024. But given injury concerns for Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle and how the team limits both of their snaps during the season, Miami should still be on the lookout for an upgrade at No. 3 wide receiver.

Hill has already publicly lobbied on social media for Thomas, who at one point won Offensive Player of the Year with the New Orleans Saints but has been derailed by injuries. At his peak, Thomas was one of the best route runners in the NFL who did damage over the middle of the field. But he’s played in just 20 games in the last four seasons. However, at 6-3 and 212 pounds, Thomas could give quarterback Tua Tagovailoa a bigger pass-catcher who could take advantage of a team’s No. 3 cornerback.

Guard

Who’s available: Kevin Zeitler, Dalton Risner, Greg Van Roten, Laken Tomlinson, Isaiah Wynn

Breakdown: The Dolphins signed a potentially new starting center in Aaron Brewer. Miami, though, still has question marks at both guard spots. Right guard Robert Hunt signed with the Carolina Panthers and Wynn remains an unrestricted free agent.

The guard market blew up this offseason, with Hunt leaving for a deal that averages $20 million per year and other interior linemen receiving similar deals. There remains many veteran linemen who could come in and start or compete for playing time. Zeitler might be the best of the remaining group but he’s more of a fit for a gap run scheme than the zone scheme the Dolphins like to use. Tomlinson has excelled in the Shanahan-style offense that head coach Mike McDaniel has brought to Miami but Tomlinson struggled during his time with the New York Jets. Wynn, injury concerns and all, could be the best option for Miami in free agency, given his likely cost and impact if he stays healthy.

Defensive line/edge rusher

Who’s available: Teair Tart, Calais Campbell, Lawrence Guy, Jadeveon Clowney, Kyle Van Noy

Breakdown: The Dolphins have been active in finding replacements for Christian Wilkins and Raekwon Davis. Before free agency even opened, Miami signed a pair of veteran defensive tackles. And since the legal tamping period last week, Miami has signed three additional linemen, while also agreeing to terms to re-sign Da’Shawn Hand. Miami has brought in plenty of bodies to compete for snaps but Campbell and Guy are former Ravens who have knowledge of new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver’s scheme and could contribute in a rotation.

The same goes for Clowney and Van Noy, who had one of their best seasons as pros in Baltimore last season. The Dolphins have already agreed to terms with Shaq Barrett but adding another veteran pass rusher would give Miami quality insurance while Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips continue their rehab and depth once they return.

Safety

Who’s available: Justin Simmons, Quandre Diggs, Mike Edwards, Jayron Kearse, Adrian Phillips

Breakdown: The Dolphins agreed to terms with former Buffalo Bill Jordan Poyer, and he currently projects as the starter next to Jevon Holland. Poyer’s arrival, though, shouldn’t preclude Miami from bringing in a third safety who could fill in if needed. Last season, the Ravens also used three-safety-packages among the highest rates in the NFL and that is something that Weaver could bring to Miami.
