Right in the heart of town, this 17th-century luxury hotel sits on the edge of the Red Light District. That might be off-putting for some, but it is an attractive part of Amsterdam, not to mention one of the oldest. The building dates from 1578 and was a monastery, doubling as a lodge for royal visitors to the city before becoming an Admiralty Building, then Amsterdam’s City Hall for nearly 200 years.
