Bement superintendent steps down from Monticello council ahead of move to Bement

Apr. 30—MONTICELLO — Bement Superintendent Mary Vogt is stepping down from the Monticello City Council.

Vogt told The News-Gazette that she is moving to Bement.

"When I first started as the superintendent, the board allowed me the flexibility of staying a Monticello resident," she said. "My stepson was still in high school. So now I'm just at that point where, while I've enjoyed my time on the council, I feel like I would like to be part of the community where I work."

Vogt publicly announced her resignation at the council's April 22 meeting, which marked her final session. She said serving had been an "honor and privilege" and expressed gratitude to city staff and officials, including Mayor Larry Stoner.

"I remember when I found out that there was an opening and you and I talked, and I laughed and said, 'I've got to be the last person you would consider having on council,'" Vogt said.

"She didn't give you the good part," Stoner interjected. "I told her that she was the first person I called."

He added that she has been "a real pillar on the council."

Stoner is seeking applicants to fill the at-large position vacated by Vogt. More information on how to apply is available at .
