During they days of solidarity acts such as the Women’s March and #MeToo movement, which are uniting women of all backgrounds, pitting two young women against each other isn’t going to get many people’s popular vote. Actress Bella Thorne recently spoke her truth surrounding the issue of forced competition between women.

Seventeen Latin shared a a side-by-side photo of Thorne and her former Shake It Up co-star, Zendaya, with the caption translated from Spanish, “Who looks better in a sensual red lipstick?” Once Thorne got wind of the tweet, she wasn’t too thrilled about the “beauty battle” the publication proposed and responded: “Beauty battle? That’s not right. Damn it’s been years and people still wanna pin us against each other in some way. love you z.”

Following Thorne’s posts, lots of people began sharing their thoughts on Seventeen Latin‘s original “beauty battle” post as well, with many agreeing that the two should not have to compete in any way. One person wrote, “why do ppl have to do this?! everybodys beautiful in their own way!!” Another chimed in with, “Both of you are beautiful don’t let social media tear apart your relationship.” More than 2,000 others kept the conversation going, mostly siding with Thorne’s sentiments.

Last February, Thorne opened up to J-14 about how she was constantly “forced to compete” with Zendaya while they were on Disney’s Shake It Up together. “Zendaya and I were put in a very unfortunate position where we were kind of forced to compete against each other [during Shake It Up], which made the whole first season of the show just very awkward for us,” she said. “We wanted to love each other, but yet we were constantly being put against each other. It was, ‘Who’s better at this?’ and ‘Who’s better at that?’”

Thorne also revealed that she and Zendaya ended up having a “tell-all talk” during which the two of them cried and were able to lay everything on the table. This essentially led to them developing a strong friendship and unbreakable bond. “We text each other all the time, and we’re always sending photos back and forth,” she said.

A “beauty battle” mimics the similar “Who wore it best?” concept used by many publications to compare what celebrities are wearing. However, when it comes to the idea of beauty, everyone has his or her own unique look that’s personal to that individual and shouldn’t be voted on through a poll. Thorne and Zendaya have been friends for a while now, and from the looks of it, they aren’t going to let a Twitter poll break their bond.
