Beckley hires recruitment firm for city manager search

Apr. 23—The city of Beckley will pay a Virginia-based recruitment agency just over $28,000 to help the city find its first city manager.

The Beckley Common Council approved the contract with Baker Tilly at its meeting Tuesday evening.

As part of the contract, Beckley Attorney Bill File said Baker Tilly will do everything from preparing a profile for an ideal candidate to assisting with the employment offer the city extends to its chosen candidate.

"They do the full scope of services that we were requesting," File said.

Beckley Council approved Baker Tilly's base contract fee of $26,950 and an additional fee of $1,650 for the company to conduct a web-based community survey.

For any additional services from Baker Tilly, the city will be billed at an hourly rate of $300 plus expenses.

This decision follows the recommendation from Beckley's City Manager Recruitment Committee, which reviewed the two proposals Beckley received from recruitment agencies.

AtWork Personnel of Beckley also bid for the job, but it was deemed to not have as much expertise as Baker Tilly.

According to its proposal, Baker Tilly has aided municipalities across the U.S. in hiring high-level administrators. In its proposal, the company provided the city with a list of more than 100 instances it has done so just since 2019.
