Beckley Fire Department captain declares recent recruitment efforts to be a success

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Recent recruiting efforts have paid off for Beckley Fire Department, Capt. Rick Fisher said on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

In March, BFD had hosted recruitment fairs to encourage candidates to apply for firefighting positions.

Capt. Fisher said the event attracted 51 applicants, and 34 of the candidates passed their written test to become firefighters.

He said the candidates must now pass an agility test. He said there is typically a 60 to 80 percent pass rate on the agility test, which is difficult.

“Traditionally, people know what tests we give, so they know it is a hard test, so usually they are already starting to get in shape or are already in pretty good shape,” he said.
