Baton Rouge Police hold benefit lunch to help officer after medical emergency

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A group of law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge are coming together to help one of their own.

The Baton Rouge Police Department joined forces to sell lunch plates to raise money for Cpl. Sirtelli Dorsey and his medical bill.

On April 13, Dorsey started experiencing symptoms on the job. His supervisor, Josh Ellis, who has advanced EMT training advised Dorsey to go to the hospital. Dorsey, who has been an officer for nearly 10 years, was diagnosed with bleeding on the brain from an aneurysm.

Baton Rouge Chief of Police Thomas Morse Jr. said he got to the hospital just in time.

“The Baton Rouge Police Department is a family. Our department is small enough where we all know each other and we have that family atmosphere, but big enough that we have a lot of opportunities for people that want to go to work with us. And it’s times like this you really see the family come together, the community coming in to help support,” said Morse.

BRPD partnered with Behind the Line, which is a non-profit dedicated to helping first responders and their families.

“We can come in and we can help in any way that we can,” said Mary Katherine Matterich with Behind the Line.
