Baton Rouge Community College using new grant to train students for film, movie jobs

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Dean of Liberal Arts at Baton Rouge Community College said film students will have a rare opportunity after receiving a $750,000 grant.

“The grant will allow BRCC to expand its mission to provide the Baton Rouge community with training opportunities for high-wage, high-demand jobs. Students will be able to seek meaningful, long-term employment in Louisiana’s increasingly active film industry and beyond,” said Rhett Poche’, the dean of liberal arts.

BRCC will get $250,000 from the state’s Entertainment Development Fund for the next three years. The money is to support its work with Celtic Studios and the International Alliance for Theatrical and Stage Employees.

The college will use the award to enhance its practical, hands-on filmmaking courses. They will get new, top-of-the-line equipment. According to Poche’, the money will also go to hiring new faculty with industry experience.

BRCC will work with Celtic Studios and Betaversity. They will create a digital copy of Celtic Studios. It will be an interactive, gamified virtual training space. It will focus on studio operations.

Students will still get the hands-on training needed by any aspiring filmmaker, Poche’ said. But, the training will include the simulated Celtic Studios environment. It will teach students how to navigate a professional production setting.

“Something the average film student rarely has the opportunity to do,” Poche’ said.

The hope is that BRCC serves as a pipeline to film industry jobs in the state.

BRCC’s goal is to speed up student entry into the industry. They should be ready to work for film productions at Celtic Studios or similar places, Poche’ said.

“A local career in film is attainable right here in Baton Rouge. Aspiring filmmakers do not have to move to Los Angeles or New York City in order to find jobs in the entertainment industry,” Poche’ said. “The industry is right here in Louisiana, and BRCC will do its part to ensure jobs get filled with the next generation of home-grown talent who will contribute to our state’s culture and economy.”
