Bar overserved obviously intoxicated man who killed two in fiery crash, lawsuit claims
DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — The families of two people killed in a fiery 2023 crash are suing a Dothan bar, accusing the owners of overserving a man charged with causing the deadly wreck after he the establishment.
Leon Aubrey Jones is charged in the deaths of 30-year-old Derek Blessing and his 42-year-old aunt, Aubrey Jenkins. The two died in a crash in mid-March 2023.
Jones and Uncle Bob’s Sports Bar were named defendants in the lawsuit.
According to the lawsuit, filed Wednesday, March 5, on the night of the crash, staff at Uncle Bob’s continued to serve Jones after he became visibly intoxicated and allowed him to leave the bar in his car despite being drunk.
Dothan Police say Jones drove over the speed limit in his 2021 Dodge Charger when he hit Blessing’s 2018 Hyundai in the 2500 block of Ross Clark Circle.
The Hyundai then rolled into a ditch and burst into flames. Blessing and Jenkins were pronounced dead on the scene.
Jones is facing two counts of Manslaughter and pled not guilty in November 2023. He is awaiting trial.
Attorneys request a jury trial and seek the maximum punitive damages against Uncle Bob’s and Jones allowed under Alabama Law.
