Balboa Theatre offering $3.50 tickets for 100th anniversary

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Arts lovers on a budget can enjoy several events at the historic Balboa Theatre as it celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
Next week, the centennial celebrations kick off with the Balboa Theatre 100th Anniversary Gala featuring Hershey Felder and the Great American Songbook on Thursday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. An acclaimed pianist, actor and filmmaker, Felder will be performing American music from throughout the last century including works by Rogers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim and more. Limited tickets are available starting at $50.
San Diego Theatres will then be hosting the following shows at an affordable cost of only $3.50 per ticket.
On Friday, March 29, guests are invited to take part in the Centennial Salute: Honoring San Diego’s Military at the Balboa Theatre. A screening of the silent film “The Flying Fleet” with musical accompaniment by the theatre organ will take place at 7 p.m. The film was the first major Hollywood production to film at Naval Air Station North Island and features the USS Langley, the United States’ first aircraft carrier.

Then on Saturday, March 30, families with children of all ages can participate in Toons and Tunes. The 10 a.m. event includes a screening of classic cartoons with characters like Felix the Cat, Popeye and Mighty Mouse. There will be a Roaring ’20s-themed costume parade for the kids as well as free coloring books.

Also on Saturday, guests can experience the finale of Balboa Theatre’s 100th anniversary celebration with musical performances by various performing arts companies including San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, San Diego Opera and Classics 4 Kids.
